Is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for me?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a highly effective martial art for self-defence. Perfect for women and kids to learn in a non-violent space. We prioritise your safety at training.

Think of it like a game of human chess where your movement is your chess piece. Having a strategy in place puts in you a better position than others.

The biggest challenge for many white belts is that when they first started Jiu Jitsu, they do not have enough techniques in their arsenal so they rely heavily on brute strength.

One tip from us:
Focus on techniques you’ve learnt on the day and try to implement it when you are training. Over time, slowly but surely, you’ll find that technique will become easier.

How effective is Jiu Jitsu when it comes to self-defense?

We get this question very often. Jiu Jitsu originated from the concept that a practitioner who is physically smaller and weaker is able to outmanoeuvre an opponent double their size when equipped with the right techniques.

This is because BJJ relies on techniques, timing, momentum and leverage. It is one of the most effective martial arts when it comes to self defense for women.

At Clube de Lutas, you’ll get to learn a variety of self defense techniques that you can apply in real-life scenarios, from breaking their grips on your arm to using their strength against them, to taking them down on the ground.

Is Jiu Jitsu a good way to lose weight?

We have seen many of our students who started Jiu Jitsu as part of their weight loss journey.

Did you know you may burn up to 1000+ calories in one Brazilian Jiu Jitsu session? That’s nearly half the recommended daily consumption of an average person!

One simple & basic technique in Jiu Jitsu works out your core, back, hips and legs, that’s nearly the entire body! Whilst drilling repetitively, you get to work out different parts of your body. Then when it comes to rolling, you get to develop a different kind of stamina as compared to other sports like swimming, badminton, tennis, et cetera, taking your fitness to the next level.

I’m not interested in competing.

That’s totally fine. There are many reasons to train Jiu Jitsu and some may enjoy the self defense and challenge of learning Jiu Jitsu whilst others may find the thrill in competing and winning medals.

However, if you are someone who is interested in bringing home some medals and putting your Jiu Jitsu to the test, we have a competition team that competes at a high level in local and international Brazilian Jiujitsu competitions. Both Professor Alex & Kalil have impressive competition track records and referee experiences internationally & locally.

Professor Alex has won a number of major competitions including the Abu Dhabi World Professional Champion (2013), IBJJF Sydney Open Gi & No Gi Champion (2019), World Champion (2001) and Brazilian National Champion across 3 consecutive years (1998, 1999, 2001). In 2014, Alex was nominated Head of the Referee board at Jiu Jitsu Asian Union (JJAU) and the Internation Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation (IBJJF). Today, he is the Head Referee of the NSW Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation (NSWBJJ) who knows the IBJJF and ADCC rules inside and out.

This year alone, Professor Kalil recently won double Gold in AFBJJ NSW State Championships, brought home bronze at Judo Australia National Championship and also placed second in ADCC Oceania & Asian Wrestling Trials.

Is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu hard?

If we’re honest – yes, it is hard and the first 3 months are the hardest.

This is why our coaches have devised an Intro to BJJ class to make Jiu Jitsu simple and fun for everyone to learn. This is a private one-on-one or one-on-two session perfect for anyone trying out BJJ for the first time.

After practising and coaching Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for more than 40 years collectively, Professor Alex & Professor Kalil have coached a wide range of students with different personalities, traits and characters. They understand how difficult jiujitsu can be, especially if you have not been the most athletic, the most flexible, or the strongest in the crowd.

Today, they have students internationally, spanning across Brazil, the United Kingdom, UAE and of course, Australia.

Promoting Mindfulness through Jiujitsu

Jiujitsu is like an escape for the mind. When you are grappling, your mind and body become one. It’s like you have woken up to a Self where you become more aware. You’ll find yourself exploring the sport through a new lens where you try your best in applying techniques you have learnt in class to get out of bad positions.

When you are fully present in the moment, you enter a state of flow, some call it mindfulness. This state helps you learn to focus, be present and consequently relieve the stress you are experiencing outside of the training mats. Every time you step off the mats, you have unconsciously trained your mind to be present for others simply by paying attention.

I’m scared of sparring – I don’t want to get hurt or hurt others.

The only way to learn jiujitsu is to spar with another, or we call it “rolling”. We have allocated 15-30 minutes at the end of every class where you’ll get to grapple with other students.

You will be matched with someone similar in size and weight so you can have a fair roll, or you will be paired with someone who is more experienced in martial art. When this happens, fret not, you are in for the most insightful roll. Higher belts have been in your shoes and they understand what you’re going through. You may even get some tips in understanding the sport even more.

BJJ is the martial art where you can spar at full intensity without risking getting hurt because unlike mixed martial arts (MMA), Muay Thai, boxing or kickboxing where you could be at receiving end of a punch or a kick.

As coaches, we are trained to catch a bad injury early on so we may step in to stop the matches where we deem necessary to prevent any further harm to our students. It is important to us that we create a safe space for everyone to learn this beautiful art – Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Book yourself into our Intro to BJJ class today and jump-start your journey at Clube de Lutas!
We have a flexible timetable especially for Intro to BJJ Class throughout the day.
