4 Reasons kids should train BJJ

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a highly effective form of non-violent martial art especially in self-defense for children as it focuses on grappling and ground fighting. It teaches students how to defend themselves on the ground against bigger and stronger opponents utilising control and submission over kicks and punches.

This style of martial art is great for children who are smaller in size than their bullies or adults because it teaches them how to get out of bad situations without hurting themselves or others.

Every year we see an increase of Jiu Jitsu practitioners on a national and global scale demonstrating the art beautifully in their own ways through local and international competitions like Worlds, Worlds Master, Worlds Pro, Abu Dhabi Pro, ADCC Pro. This is because it offers a number of benefits that can help people lead healthier lives. With this martial art, people are able to learn how to defend themselves, while also getting some exercise and having fun at the same time.

As we see the growth in the sport, the increasing number of youth practitioners has noticeably increased as well. One of the beautiful aspects of this Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is that it is a martial art for everyone, regardless of age, size, gender or background.

The safety of our students is one of our main priorities during classes, here are some reasons why Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is absolutely safe for children to practice:

Developing Life Skills

At Clube de Lutas, our vision is not only to teach but also to empower our students with vital life skills through Jiu Jitsu. These life skills will help guide and shape strong, confident and capable children. Our kids’ program centres around 8 core values:

  1. Respect

  2. Discipline

  3. Self-confidence

  4. Resilience

  5. Decision making

  6. Problem-solving

  7. Persistence

  8. Teamwork

These are important life skills that transform our students’ growth and mindset. The earlier these values are instilled in them, the higher chance that our youth will be able to apply these skills in life.

Better Social Skills

Clube de Lutas Kids Program are conducted in groups where our students are all working together to reach a common goal. In Jiu Jitsu, although it may seem like an individual sport, if you look closely, the teamwork behind every strong practitioner runs deep. Communication and cooperation between both partners are crucial when it comes to feedback for improvement.

Our students are put together where they need to work together repetitively, this includes warm-up, takedowns, drills, and sparring rounds. Sometimes, we gamify our program that aligns with the technique of the day to keep our students engaged with one another whilst developing the foundation of Jiu Jitsu.

Reduced Screen Time

Screen time is becoming a concern for many parents.

Blocking out an hour a day for your children to spend time away from your devices is our best tip for reducing screen time for you and your children. This way all of you get to stay active and bring down the number of hours you spend in front of screens.

Whilst at training, your children are present in class where they learn to be more attentive for one hour without any distraction from a mobile device or computer. An hour away from the screens has more benefits than you know, such as:

  • Healthier eyes & prevent future vision problems

  • Reduce the risk of cyberbullying

  • Healthier body

  • Reduce the risk of anxiety and depression

Something for You

At Clube de Lutas, we also run fitness programs alongside our Kids Program so you can get an hour of exercise in whilst waiting for your children to finish their classes.
